Horizontal Primary Navigation

Updated March 2025

The UCM Web Development team is introducing a new horizontal display option for the Primary Navigation. Currently, the Primary Navigation is located in the center column of the site navigation panel that appears when a user clicks the hamburger menu.

It is important to note that this is not a new menu, but instead an alternative way to display the existing Primary Navigation menu.

How the Horizontal Navigation Option Works

When the horizontal menu option is enabled on your site, the menu will appear by default at the top of each page. As the user scrolls, the horizontal menu will scroll out of view and the existing hamburger menu will be available for navigation.

The horizontal menu will not be enabled on your site by default. To request this feature, please submit the UCM Support request form and select Project Type: "Website", Type of Web Project: "Update existing web page/website".

Requirements

A horizontal menu has limited space for menu items. To ensure readability and usability, your Primary Navigation may need to be adjusted before enabling this option.

Recommended guidelines:

  • Minimum: 4 menu items
  • Maximum: 6 menu items (if menu link titles are relatively short)
  • If menu link titles are longer, limit the horizontal Primary Navigation to 5 items
  • The horizontal menu supports only two levels of navigation: top-level primary navigation items and a single level of dropdown (flyout) menu items.

The UCM Web Team is available to help evaluate your site’s content and navigation to determine if the horizontal menu display option is a good fit.
