Award of Excellence -  May 2017
Communicator Awards

Tulane.edu won an Award of Excellence, the highest honor in the 23rd annual Communicator Awards, for launch of its rebuilt website. The Tulane web team had the buy-in of senior leadership and the campus community for a new website, but they needed a data-driven, comprehensive strategy for how to go about it. The finished site makes a strong visual impact, prominently highlights Tulane’s research, conveys the rich culture of its New Orleans campus, and offers visitors a streamlined navigation.

Grand Gold Medal for Crisis Communications, 2006 - June 2006
Council for Advancement and Support of Secondary Education

In 2006, our Tulane University communications team was awarded the Grand Gold Medal for Crisis Communications by CASE, the Council for Advancement and Support of Secondary Education (the world's largest international association of educational institutions). This award honored our work during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when 11,000 students and 6,000 employees were scattered across the United States, Tulane's campuses were flooded, normal communications were disabled, and the infrastructure of New Orleans was destroyed. The storm flooded 70 percent of the Tulane campus, inflicted more than $650 million in damages and caused the university to shut down for an entire semester, the first such occurrence since the Civil War.

Silver Anvil Award for Crisis Communications, 2006 - June 2006
Public Relations Society of America

In 2006, our team was awarded the Silver Anvil Award for Crisis Communications by the public Relations Society of America, the industry's highest honor, for our work inthe aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Tulane University's campus suffered major damage: its 11,000 students and 6,000 employees were scattered across the United States; and the infrastructure of New Orleans was destroyed. The university's emergency website was working only part of the time and the e-mail system was down. Cell phones from New Orleans' 504 area code were non-functioning. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and the news media were clamoring for information. Our skeleton communications crew developed a multi-pronged, web-based communications plan. During the next four months communications proceeded in a non-stop effort to inform audiences about the university's status.
